FAQ

How can I contact you for a business inquiry?

For business inquiries and to suggest a possible barber shop filming location, please use this contact form to email us.

If you have a general question about our videos or our travels, then we encourage you to ask your question in the comments section of the blog post, YouTube video, or FaceBook post. This is so your question and our response will be visible to everyone.

How did it all begin?

Good question!  Take a look at our How It All Started page to find out about the origins of this journey.

What equipment do you use?

Over the years of creating videos for You Tube we have experimented with various cameras and equipment.  Please check out the Our Camera Gear blog post where we go into more detail about the equipment we currently use.

Who films the videos?

Primarily, it is just me and Mystery Woman!  With the exception of four videos, Mystery Woman has filmed all of the barbershop experiences for the HairCut Harry YouTube channel.  I typically film the interviews, vlogs, and B-roll.

Do you have a team that works with you to create content for HairCut Harry?

Generally speaking no, as we do not have money in the budget to pay professionals for production services.

I do the video editing while all of the photography, research, planning, scheduling, social media management, and content creation for the blog is shared by me and Mystery Woman.

Are you filming the videos for the purpose of ASMR?

No, the ASMR has been unintentional!  Honestly, we did not know what ASMR was until people started commenting about it on the videos we shared.

Keep in mind, the first video we uploaded to our YouTube channel was actually filmed in 1999.  The original edited version we uploaded in 2006 received a lot of interest even back then for the uniqueness of the experience and location.

Over the years our approach to filming has been from a documentary perspective as we try to share a small glimpse into the character of the barbers and barber shops we visit while traveling.

The reason we limit talking in the videos is mainly due to the added complication of editing a coherent experience.  Early on we decided to film separate interview videos with the barbers where we could get to know them, share their stories, and learn about their shop.  Please check out our interview playlist on YouTube.

How do you find the barbers and barbershops featured on your YouTube channel?

We are always on the lookout for unique interesting barbers and barbershops to film!

We identify shops by doing a lot of research online, receiving suggestions from viewers, and also by getting out and looking for the right locations.  Although we prefer to have filming scheduled ahead of time, occasionally we have found great barbershops by being on location.

Sometimes the search begins with just a single photograph.  We take several factors into consideration before we ultimately decide where to film.

Do you tell the barbers how to cut your hair in the videos?

No, I allow the barbers to give a haircut they think will look good on me.  It is an opportunity for the barbers to show off their talent and it exposes me to different styles.

What was your best haircut experience?

I have enjoyed all of the experiences and like them all for different reasons!

How can I help support HairCut Harry and do you sell merchandise?

Thank you so much for asking!  We now offer merchandise for sale via our HairCut Harry Teespring Store.

You can also checkout our support HairCut Harry page to find out about free and affordable ways to help support the content being created by HairCut Harry.

Do you travel to locations solely to visit barbershops?

Typically, we choose a destination we would like to travel to and then we begin researching barbershops in that location.  When traveling we generally visit multiple cities within a country.  Therefore, we have a few options to research for filming locations.

How many countries have you traveled to?

So far, I have travelled to fifty countries as follows: U.S.A. (27 states so far), Canada, Mexico, Antigua and Barbuda, Costa Rica, Peru, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Nepal, India, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Vatican City, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Greece, Turkey, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Estonia, Denmark, United Kingdom, Ireland, Iceland, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Niger, Mali, Senegal, The Gambia, and United Arab Emirates.

What are some of your favorite places to travel?

Personally, I like visiting places with a lot of history and culture to explore.  I prefer ancient ruins over beaches, but I do enjoy dramatic natural scenery where you can get lost!

Outside of the countries I have officially lived in some of my favorite places are:  Indonesia which I have visited multiple times and still have barely touched its surface; Kathmandu Valley, Nepal with so much history and natural wonder; Algeria as there were no tourists and the locals were so welcoming; and Siam Reap, Cambodia where we spent over a week exploring the Angkor Wat ruins and still needed more time!
